HISTORY OF TEMPLE

The Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the three gods. This is how the name Rameswaram came to be. The name Rameswaram comes from the Sanskrit language (Rma-varam) and means “Lord of Rama,” referring to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Rameswaram temple is one of India’s 12 Jyotirlings. Jyotirlings are sacred places where Lord Shiva manifested himself as a tall column of light, hence the name Jyotirling.
